Some Writer!: The Story of E.B. White

Some Writer!: The Story of E.B. White
by Melissa Sweet
Publication date: October 4, 2016
HMH Books for Young Readers

I have been anticipating this book since hearing Melissa talk about it last February at the Children's Literature Conference at Western Washington University.  "Some Writer" exceeded the expectations Melissa created!  I read this bio cover to cover and was truly immersed in Melissa's writing and the minute details in her art.  This feels like a scrapbook full of pieces of E.B. White's life.  It was impressive that White's granddaughter not only shared material with Sweet but wrote an afterword for this book.  I am still going back and lingering over pages, savoring the beautiful design of this book.  I love E.B. White's book and so appreciate this stunning bio that will make a great non-fiction read-aloud!
Can you think of a better way to help children understand what a typewriter was?
Photographs, illustrations of scenes from E.B. White's will be immersed for hours!

Ranger in Time #4

Ranger in Time; Race to the South Pole
by Kate Messner
Scholastic Inc., 2016
ISBN 978-0-545-63925-5

Nice addition to the Ranger series!
Plenty of adventure and historical facts to keep children interested.  As always, Messner does a great job of documenting sources and providing further reading ideas for readers.

Kate DiCamillo Video

This is not a new video but I can never listen to Kate DiCamillo enough.  I also think this is a great video to share with your students as the year comes to a close and they may be losing momentum with writing!  So many great messages from a writer who has accomplished so much!

Book Expo America 2016

Three days at Book Expo America in Chicago...pure bliss!  Being surrounded by people who love books as much as I do is an amazing treat.  Receiving free arcs of soon-to-be published books feels like treasures.  Talking books for three days is some of the best talk one can have!  Here are some photos from the three days.  Soon to come will be the sharing of the many books I brought home!

Finding new books

As I look at my spring reading, I realized that I find titles for my "next reads" in so many places!

  • A recommendation from 5th graders:  Shakespeare's Secret by Elise Broach
  • From the Newbery reading group on Goodreads that I participate in:  The Bitter Side of Sweet by Tara Sullivan
  • A book I saw on a blog a couple of months ago:  The Great Pet Escape (Victoria Jamieson)...but I also wanted to read this because I loved Roller Girl (also by Jamieson)
  • Series book...I've had this one since it was released and I loaned it to a student who loved it.  It's my next book in the stack:  Masterminds, Criminal Destiny (Gordon Korman)
  • I never miss a Babymouse!  This popped up on my Goodreads that it had been released so I just picked it up from the library.  Love, love, love Babymouse!  Babymouse Goes for the Gold (Jennifer Holm, Matthew Holm)
